The Closing of Ellis Island ...
After the end of World War I, people wishing to flee their countries were able to fill out all of the necessary paper-work, complete medical examinations, and obtain visas at American consulates in their own country. People were only held at Ellis Island if they had problems with their paper-work. During World War II enemy seamen were held as prisoners on Ellis Island, and the U.S. Coast Guard used it to train their men. In 1954, the last person was released, and Ellis Island closed.
